Surprise!

Bright light spilled down from the ceiling. A smell of chocolate and cleaning detergent was present in the air. The marble floors were glistening after being vigorously wiped.

The squeeky balloons were untidily taped to the walls. They gave off a rubbery odour. The balloons were of different sizes, ranging from a fist to a watermelon sized balloon. There were all sorts of colours on them too, such as neon orange, sea blue and even scary purple. Streamers hung down from the necks of the balloons, like coats on a coat hanger. The colours of the thin paper streamers were far more dull, ranging from rich brown to a warm orange yellow. The room where these were placed was inside an apartment. The spotless white walls reached up to the pink ceiling with a few tubelights dangling about. A flowery ceramic plate sat upon the table holding a dozen burgers.

The fan whirred and a vacuum cleaner whooshed in the neighbour’s apartment. The smell of the appetising burgers was unbearable. Roasted chicken with mayonnaise, tomatoes and sour pickles was nestled in between two toasted, golden-brown buns. A mysterious cakebox rested upon the counter of a kitchen as tiny as two aircraft toilets crammed together. The kitchen sink was filled to the brim with dirty plates, mugs and a saucepan.

The door creaked open. A smell of sweet citrus and green apple gently spread across the room. The eyes of the people inside lit up, their faces jerked to a smile and they said in chorus, “surprise!” and laughed. The lady who walked in gave a shy, uncomfortable look. All eyes fell upon her. There was an awkward silence. The vacuum suddenly stopped and the fan began giving a fast paced beat of a clicking noise. She weakly smiled back and walked in. Her brown hair was ruffled after a long day’s work and her eyes were dark. The woman sat on the sofa. The sofa was velvet purple and incredibly soft. She was still in a state of surprise as her shoulders stiffly remained locked. “Another ordeal I must endure”, she thought.
